RE: Recent Reclassification of Erie County from “Urban” to “Rural” Area by the Department of Public Welfare

Dear (Representative/Senator) (Last Name),

As a resident of the (insert Legislative or Senate District,) I am writing to express my concern about the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare’s recent decision to downgrade Erie County from an “urban” to “rural” area.

This downgrade immediately jeopardizes organizations that provide services to those with developmental disabilities and has the potential to negatively spiral, affecting jobs in local social service agencies countywide. According to a recent article in the Erie Times News, these cuts will not produce additional savings. It appears, then, to be another attempt by Harrisburg politicians to marginalize Erie — an attempt our community does not stand for and cannot afford.

(Add a personal anecdote about how these changes will affect you, your family, friends, or community.)

Other counties one-sixth the size of Erie County were not reclassified. I urge you to work with your colleagues in Pennsylvania’s General Assembly and put pressure on Governor Corbett, his administration, and the leadership of the Department of Public Welfare to reexamine their classification and restore Erie’s classification to “urban.”

Sincerely,
